Cathair na Stéige

The Staigue Fort, or Cathair na Steige, as it is known in the Irish language, is surrounded on three sides by mountain, and looks out over the Kenmare Bay. The exact date of construction is unknown, but experts date it between one and two thousand years old.

Many different and conflicting theories about the use of the fort abound, including its use as an amphitheatre or as place of sanctuary in time of war. It has been suggested as a place of gathering during tribal times and as a place of ritual worship, perhaps to a Sun deity. No excavation has taken place at Staigue Fort, however a gold bracelet and a whetstone have been found in the surrounding area.
